April 2021!
Forgive all the weather talk – what can I say, I am a farmer 😂 The highs and lows of spring – 70 one day, 20 the next – are great reminders to BE MORE FLEXIBLE! The plants are fine! Spring bloomers are used to extremes and actually prefer the cold. We’ve had some serious swings over the last month and it is crazy ironic how the weather can parallel life in so many ways. Lots of highs and lows and lots of average days in between.
We are gearing up for a very busy 2021 season. Our first anemones have bloomed! I’ve steered clear of some of the belles of spring in my first seasons between working another job, and having a baby (!!) and so this is my first try with anemones and I can definitely say she was WORTH.THE.WAIT and that we will 100% be incorporating more anemones into future crop plans.
We have over 1200 ranunculus in the field waiting to put on a show - they prefer sunny cool (basically perfect) 70* temps — and it looks like we have just what they asked for in the forecast for the next 10 days - woohoo! and lots of other spring blooms will follow. The peonies are already 16” out of the ground…Lilac is blooming…SPRING IS IN THE AIR and the greenhouse is overflowing! Based on how many !!! I’ve used here, you can probably tell I’M EXCITED!
If you ordered tubers from us, we have begun shipping and will continue to crank over the next week to get them all out into the world. Thanks for your patience – I am literally a one woman show and most of all want your tubers to be safe! We typically plant mid-May here in Maryland 7b.
My inbox has been popping all of a sudden with garden enthusiasts wanting to know more about our cut-flower-gardens-to-go. So, here is a quick overview:
We have two collections – pink and peach – Available the week of Mother’s Day
25+ plants in each collection (zinnias, cosmos, delphinium, echinacea, strawflower, ornamental basil, etc)
LOCAL PICKUP ONLY (unless you order a bunch or coordinate with a friend, in which case we will deliver your orders of $150+ or more)
We also have tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, herbs and more available for purchase – local only – for pickup once the weather warms and is safe! We usually go by 5/15 being the last frost; last year this was fairly accurate but most years we see last frost in April! I will be sending a note out hopefully by this weekend to confirm details for pickups, and will be updating the store with more tomato varieties (went a lil’ crazyyyyy…)
We will be offering Mother’s Day deliveries but I am being cautious about listing them until I have a better idea on timing for these fickle spring crops - stay tuned for that announcement. In the meantime, another great gift to yourself or for your loved one is a subscription to our monthly bouquet delivery (local DMV area only). I am SO EXCITED to get our flowers into your hands (and those of your loved ones) this season and am so appreciative of your excitement as well. We will still be doing occasional weekly deliveries around town as well! Check out the options and let me know if you are interested but don’t fall into one of the areas we’ve outlined.
This farm wouldn’t exist without your support and enthusiasm! Thanks for buying, cheering me on, sharing with friends and family, and loving local! Things are about to get crazy beautiful again! Stay safe and healthy!
